Congress Greenlights Bill on Eastern Mediterranean's Role in IMEC Corridor

Published January 21, 2026, 19:23

The House Foreign Affairs Committee has approved the "Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act" bill, which aims to strengthen cooperation with countries in the Eastern Mediterranean (India, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Egypt) and promote the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). The bill focuses on energy projects, such as the "Great Sea Interconnector" and the Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection, and calls on the US Secretary of State to prioritize the region. Despite the committee's approval, the final passage of the bill in the House is expected to be delayed due to the 2026 midterm elections and may be incorporated into a broader budget bill.
