ICE Agents to Deploy to Italy for Winter Olympics: “Not Welcome” Says Milan Mayor

Agents from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will be deployed to Italy for the Winter Olympics (February 6-22), according to an ICE spokesperson. ICE stated that its Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) division will support the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service and the host country in assessing and mitigating risks associated with transnational criminal organizations, while assuring that it will not conduct immigration enforcement operations in Italy. The Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, has strongly opposed the deployment, stating that ICE agents are “not welcome” in the city. He described them as a “killing militia” and condemned their practice of entering homes without authorization. This reaction comes amid heightened tensions following the killings of two American citizens in Minneapolis. Italian authorities initially denied the presence of ICE agents but later attempted to downplay their role, claiming they would focus on protecting the security of the U.S. team. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will attend the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics. There is confusion and ambiguity surrounding the exact role of the ICE agents, with Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi assuring that public order, immigration, and security management remain the responsibility of Italian police forces. The Lombardy regional governor stated that ICE involvement would be limited to monitoring Vance and Rubio, but his office later issued a statement denying the information.
