Putin: Development of Nuclear Forces is 'Top Priority'

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the development of Russia's nuclear forces is a 'top priority,' following the expiration of the New START treaty between Russia and the United States for controlling nuclear weapons. Putin also pledged to continue strengthening Russian troops fighting in Ukraine. In a message to members of the Russian armed forces, Putin emphasized the importance of the 'nuclear triad' for ensuring Russia’s security and maintaining strategic balance. He highlighted the need for continuous improvement in the quality and capabilities of the armed forces, taking into account the experience gained during the 'special military operation' in Ukraine. Putin's statement comes days after the expiration of the New START treaty, which was the last major arms control agreement between the United States and Russia. Despite the treaty's expiration, Moscow has assured it will maintain a 'responsible' approach and adhere to the agreed-upon limits on its arsenal. Tuesday marks four years since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia and the United States, as the two largest nuclear powers, are no longer bound by any agreement for controlling nuclear weapons.
