Road Plans for an 'Octuple' Road in Lakatamia – Vafeadis Updates Parliament on Major Road Projects

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis briefed the Parliamentary Committee on Transport on the progress of major road projects underway in Cyprus. Specific reference was made to the plans for the Nicosia ring road, which includes the construction of an 'octuple' road in Lakatamia. This road will consist of four underground lanes and four surface lanes, with a speed limit of 50 km/h, as well as bicycle lanes and pedestrian walkways. The committee chairman, Alekos Tryfonidis, expressed strong opposition to the plan, warning of the negative consequences for residents of the area. He called for an urgent meeting with the Planning Department and stakeholders to review the design. The Minister of Transport, while acknowledging the concerns, stressed the need to find a solution that satisfies both the needs of residents and addresses traffic congestion. Furthermore, the Minister informed about the progress of the Polis – Paphos road, where the bidding process has resumed after an appeal by the contracting company to the Review Authority, which rejected its objections. The implementation of the first part of the road, from Agia Marinouda to Stroumbi, is expected to begin soon. The discussion highlighted the complexity of road projects and the need for careful planning and consultation with local authorities and residents to ensure the sustainability and functionality of infrastructure, as well as the quality of life for citizens.
