Cyprus Dam Levels Improve After Weekend Rains

The situation in Cyprus' dams has improved after the weekend rains, with an inflow of 9.2 million cubic meters of water. The Klirou and Pomos dams have overflowed, while the Kalopanagiotis dam had overflowed earlier. However, the overall fullness remains low, at 17.2%, compared to 25.9% during the same period last year. Marios Chatzikostis, a technical engineer at the Water Development Department, described the rains as "golden", but stressed that the situation remains problematic. The total capacity of the dams is 50 million cubic meters, while the normal amount of rainfall for February is 81.6 millimeters, with current levels reaching 50 millimeters. Mr. Chatzikostis stated that additional solutions are being considered, such as the creation of new desalination units, while warning of the negative impacts of reduced fullness on the environment, biodiversity and boreholes. Despite the low fullness levels, Mr. Chatzikostis expressed cautious optimism, noting that this year may not be the worst of the last 40 years.
