Inflation: Good News for Households and Businesses

Data released by Eurostat and the European Central Bank show positive developments for households and businesses in Cyprus. Harmonized inflation in December has fallen to 0.1%, the lowest in the Eurozone, and significantly reduced compared to December 2024 (3.1%). At the same time, lending rates are falling and aligning with the EU average. The decline in inflation means that pressure on household budgets is easing, while lower interest rates could boost economic activity. However, for there to be a real decrease in prices, inflation needs to fall below zero (deflation). An analysis of the components of inflation shows that services continue to be the main source of inflationary pressures, while food and energy products show smaller increases or even declines.
