Education Committee President Calls for Dismissal of Youth Organization Board

The President of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Pavlos Mylonas, has called for the dismissal of the Board of Directors of the Youth Organization of Cyprus (ONEK), expressing the view that intervention from the President of the Republic is needed. This move came about due to conflicts between board members, between management and direction, and the organization's inability to produce work. MP Giorgos Karoulas of DISY emphasized the need to clarify the goals and priorities of ONEK. Furthermore, the Committee criticized the organization's lack of consultation with youth organizations and called for improvement in this area. Mr. Karoulas noted that the lack of consultation is a broader problem within the government. The need for ONEK actions in relation to the municipal and community councils of the occupied territories was also discussed. MP Christos Christofides of AKEL raised questions regarding the case of ONEK employee, Yannis Yannakis, and requested information about the arrangements made. He also stated that the acting Executive Secretary of the organization is partially detached to the Presidential Palace, which he believes indicates the creation of an extra-institutional team for the election work of President Christodoulides.
