Call for Resignation of Youth Organization Board in Cyprus Amidst Dysfunction Claims

The President of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Pavlos Mylonas, has called for the resignation of the Board of Directors of the Youth Organization of Cyprus (ONEK) during the second discussion of the organization's budget. Mr. Mylonas stated that conflicts of interest were apparent between board members, as well as between management and the directorate, hindering effective operation and project delivery. DHSY MP Giorgos Karoulas emphasized the need to clarify the goals and priorities of ONEK, while noting a lack of consultation with youth organizations. The Education Committee requested that the Board consult with youth organizations. Furthermore, Mr. Karoulas mentioned the need to consider ONEK's actions in relation to the municipal and community councils of the occupied territories, due to the ongoing occupation. AKEL MP Christos Christofides raised questions regarding the case of ONEK employee Yannis Yannakis and the arrangements made for his departure. Mr. Christofides also stated that the acting executive secretary of ONEK is partially detached to the Presidential Palace, suggesting the existence of an extra-institutional team for the election work of President Christodoulides. Overall, the discussion highlighted serious operational and management problems within ONEK.
