Palestinian Embassy Condemns US Provision of Consular Services to Israeli Settlements

The Palestinian Embassy in Cyprus strongly condemns the decision of the US Embassy in occupied East Jerusalem to begin providing consular services to Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The Embassy calls for an “unequivocal” condemnation from the international community, the European Union, and the Republic of Cyprus, characterizing the action as a “dangerous and unacceptable deviation from international law and United Nations resolutions.” According to the Palestinian Embassy, providing services to the settlements creates a fait accompli that strengthens Israel’s colonial policy and undermines the prospects for a just and sustainable peace. The provision of services will begin in the settlement of Efrat and will be extended to others, such as Beitar Illit. The Embassy also expresses concern about statements by US officials who, it claims, adopt rhetoric about “historical and legal rights” at the expense of the rights of the Palestinian people, as well as references to “expansionist visions.” It believes that these statements contradict the principles of the UN Charter. The Palestinian Embassy calls on the international community, the EU, and the Republic of Cyprus to condemn this development and reaffirm their commitment to international law, the end of the occupation, and the recognition of the Palestinian people’s right to an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
