Book on the Cyprus Issue by Yiannis Kareklas Presented in Nicosia

The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, welcomed the presentation of Yiannis Kareklas' book, «Cyprus 1830-1974: Road to the Abyss», which took place at the Archangelos Cultural Foundation in Nicosia. The President emphasized that Kareklas is a profound scholar of the Cyprus issue, with significant journalistic experience, and that his new book is an important addition to the literature on the subject. Christodoulides noted that the book includes important testimonies, many of which are primary sources, from key figures in Cyprus, Greece, and abroad, as well as from historians and journalists. He considered Kareklas' study to be an encyclopedia of the history of the Cyprus issue, examining the geopolitical parameters from the 18th century to the present day. At the same time, the President observed that the title of the book expresses a sense of disappointment regarding the course of the Cyprus issue. However, he cautioned against criticizing history on strict terms, given the complexity of the conditions and international power dynamics. Christodoulides concluded by emphasizing the importance of recognizing the influence of international factors and understanding that the international system often operates based on the law of power rather than the rule of law. The book, according to the President, will help in the objective and comprehensive information about the Cyprus issue.
