Cyprus Observatory of Older People Condemns MEP's Remarks on Disability

The Cyprus Observatory of Older People has strongly condemned the statements made by MEP Pheidi Panagiotou regarding category S14 of the Paralympic Games, describing them as social fascism and a sign of intellectual poverty. The Observatory emphasizes that ignorance cannot justify such statements, as Mr. Panagiotou is an elected representative and has a duty to understand the difference between disability and offensive terms. It also points out that these statements offend not only athletes but also families fighting for the rights of people with disabilities. The Observatory accuses Mr. Panagiotou of arrogance and a lack of empathy, noting that disability is part of human diversity. It demands an immediate and public apology, beyond a simple apology through social media, and recognition of the damage caused to the political culture of Cyprus. The Observatory states that it will not tolerate behavior reminiscent of dark ages of discrimination. Furthermore, the Observatory extends its criticism, asking Mr. Panagiotou his opinion on people with Dementia and Alzheimer's, implying that the same “logic” could lead to disparaging remarks about these fellow citizens. It calls on him to be serious and take responsibility, or else resign from his position. The Observatory's announcement concludes with the expression of belief that Cyprus in 2026 must be a society without exclusion, where dignity is not sacrificed for views on social media.
