Water Conservation Remains Crucial Despite Recent Rainfall - Officials

Despite recent rainfall that has contributed to an increase in water reserves in dams, the need for water conservation remains critical in Cyprus. According to officials from the Water Development Department, further significant rainfall is required to overcome the drought and restore hydrological balance. Currently, the total amount of water in dams is 34 million cubic meters, representing a fullness of 11.8%, compared to 26.1% during the same period last year. Approximately 2.4 million cubic meters of water have been recorded as inflow into the dams over the past three days, with the majority (1.2 million cubic meters) going to dams in the Paphos province. However, officials emphasize that the ground remains saturated and more rain is needed to fill the dams. In addition to the contribution of rainfall to dams, its impact on the marine ecosystem and coastlines is also significant. Rainfall helps replenish groundwater aquifers and acts as a natural defense against salinization, a serious problem in Cyprus. The Water Development Department is implementing a series of projects to improve water management, including increasing the capacity of dams and utilizing reclaimed water. The total cost of these projects exceeds €200 million and includes pipelines, water supply and irrigation projects.
