Cyprus Patient Associations Complain about Increases in Drug Contribution

Published February 18, 2026, 09:24

The Federation of Associations of Patients in Cyprus (OSAK) expresses its concern about the increases in patient contributions for medicines in the General Health System (GHS). OSAK calls on the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) and pharmaceutical companies to engage in dialogue to address the problem. These increases are caused by rearrangements in specific categories of drugs, due to the expiration of patents for original medicines. Patients are forced to pay more for medicines they have been using for a long time, without the price changing. OSAK has received complaints from both patients and doctors, as these changes particularly affect the elderly and low-income pensioners, who are struggling to cover the increased cost of their medications. The Federation emphasizes that the choice of medicine should be made by the treating physician and not based on the contribution resulting from the rearrangements in the drug lists. It calls for specific interventions to prevent the shifting of costs to patients and to ensure that no group of patients is disproportionately burdened.
