Panayiotou: Agricultural Sector Must Remain Sustainable and Competitive

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, emphasized the importance of strengthening the European agricultural sector to ensure its sustainability and competitiveness within the framework of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. The Minister spoke before the first Council on Agriculture and Fisheries in Brussels, presenting the objectives of the Cypriot Presidency's work program. Ms. Panayiotou stated that the Cypriot Presidency is taking over at a time of challenges for Europe and its farmers, but is committed to working for solutions that will have positive and immediate results. The goal is to create a Europe that is more autonomous, competitive and resilient, with agriculture playing a central role. The Council's agenda includes the strategy for the bioeconomy, the amendment of regulations for organic farming and the launch of the working group for import controls. The Minister stressed that all issues contribute to the sustainability of the agricultural sector and expressed confidence in a productive Council. Regarding the possible negative decision of the EU Court of Justice on the EU-Mercosur Agreement, Ms. Panayiotou assured that the Cypriot Presidency will continue to work as an honest mediator with all institutions, regardless of this development. The discussion on import controls was considered particularly important to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector.
