Panayiotou: Risk of Exclusion from Single Market if Culling Stops

The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panayiotou, warned of the risk of Cyprus being excluded from the Single Market if a unilateral decision is made to stop the culling of animals to combat foot-and-mouth disease without the consent of the European Commission. The Cypriot side is in constant communication with Brussels to secure flexibility in the measures, while the President of the Republic will discuss the issue directly with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The Minister stressed that such a decision could lead to restrictions not only on trade but also in other areas, such as the movement of people and tourism. The government is simultaneously continuing efforts at both political and technical levels to reach a compromise that will allow the termination of mass culling of animals without clinical symptoms. The crisis is being managed based on European regulations, however, Cyprus is trying to highlight the specificities of the country as an island state, with the aim of obtaining an exemption from the strict requirements. 600,000 doses of vaccine have already been secured, of which over 238,000 have been administered, with priority given to areas with a high epidemiological burden. The Minister assured that the State stands by the side of livestock farmers, recognizing the pain and difficulty caused by the forced slaughter of healthy animals. In addition, she referred to the intensification of controls along the ceasefire line and the dispatch of experts from the European Commission after the detection of the first case in the occupied territories.
