Pakistan: At Least 16 Dead in Karachi Building Collapse

At least 16 people, including children, have died after a building collapsed in Karachi, southern Pakistan, on the first day of Ramadan. Emergency services report that at least 13 people were injured. The collapse was triggered by an explosion, possibly of gas, although the exact cause is under investigation. Authorities believe the explosion was due to a gas leak, but investigations are continuing to determine the exact cause. The building was a three-story building in a densely populated area. This is a common occurrence in Pakistan, due to inadequate safety regulations and poor quality construction materials. Around 600 buildings in Karachi have been declared dangerous by the authorities. Karachi is a densely populated city that faces problems of poor construction quality, illegal extensions and outdated infrastructure.
