Pakistan: Death Toll in Major Shopping Mall Fire Rises to 67

The number of people who lost their lives in the fire that broke out on Saturday in a shopping mall in Karachi, southern Pakistan, has risen to at least 67, according to the latest, still preliminary, count announced today by local authorities. Autopsies have been performed on 67 bodies, and DNA analysis continues to identify the victims. Most of the dead had been locked inside a store on the mezzanine floor of the shopping mall, trying to protect themselves from the flames. The fire broke out late Saturday night at the Gul Plaza shopping mall and burned for more than 24 hours, hindering rescue efforts.
