Stranded Skiers Spell SOS in Ice – Fell into Water, Rescue Operation Launched

Two German skiers were stranded in the Bothnian Sea after the ice broke while they were overnighting. They managed to send a distress signal using pieces of ice to form the letters SOS and a radio beacon, as their equipment was lost in the icy waters. The couple was attempting to cross approximately 100 miles over the frozen sea, from Oulu, Finland to Luleå, Sweden. The rescue operation was difficult due to adverse weather conditions and mobilized the West Finland Coast Guard, as well as aircraft from Finland and Sweden. The skiers were located and rescued around 11:45 am last Tuesday, were in good condition and had already spent one night on the ice before the accident. The Gulf of Bothnia freezes for about 6 months due to low salinity and shallow depth. The incident highlights the dangers involved in crossing frozen sea areas, even for experienced skiers. Authorities warn of the need for caution and appropriate equipment in such cases.
