Over 350 New Cases of Colon Cancer Each Year in Cyprus

In Cyprus, approximately 350 to 400 new cases of colon cancer are recorded each year, making it the third most common cancer on the island. The Cyprus Gastroenterological Society, on the occasion of European Colon Cancer Awareness Month, emphasizes the importance of prevention and early diagnosis, as this cancer can be effectively treated when detected early. Colon cancer develops in the colon or rectum and often begins with benign polyps. Risk factors include an unhealthy diet, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, family history, and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. The Society expresses concern about the increasing incidence of the disease in younger people, due to changes in lifestyle. In its early stages, colon cancer often presents no symptoms, making preventive screening crucial. When symptoms do appear, they may include rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, anemia, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and abdominal pain. Colonoscopy is considered the most reliable method of prevention and diagnosis, allowing for the detection and removal of polyps. The therapeutic approach depends on the stage of the disease and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or targeted therapies. Experts emphasize that early diagnosis significantly increases the success rates of treatment. The Cyprus Gastroenterological Society calls on the public to adopt healthy habits and invest in prevention.
