Renowned German Philosopher Jürgen Habermas Dies at 96

Renowned German author and sociologist Jürgen Habermas has died at the age of 96. The news was reported by the German Press Agency, citing his publisher. Habermas was known for his work on epistemology, social theory, advanced capitalism and democracy. He was influenced by American pragmatism, the theory of action and post-structuralism. Born in 1929 into a bourgeois family in Düsseldorf, he grew up in Gümmersbach near Cologne. His childhood was marked by a cleft palate that required repeated surgeries, which influenced his thinking about language and communication. During World War II, he joined the Hitler Youth, like many other Germans of the time. After the war, he devoted himself to philosophy and social theory, leaving behind a vast and important body of work.
