Anna Psarouda-Benaki, First Female President of Greek Parliament, Dies at 92

Anna Psarouda-Benaki, the first female President of the Hellenic Parliament and the Academy of Athens, has passed away at the age of 92. The distinguished lawyer, politician, and Emeritus Professor of Criminal Law was a pioneer in the political and academic life of Greece. The President of the Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of Anna Benaki-Psarouda, emphasizing her rare intellectual strength, deep legal training, and commitment to democratic institutions. He pointed out that she paved the way for women in politics and served Parliament with dignity and seriousness. Anna Benaki-Psarouda was born in Exarcheia and studied law at the University of Athens and in Germany. She served as Minister of Justice and Culture, and consistently dedicated herself to the science of Criminal Law. Her funeral will be held in a private family circle. Anna Psarouda-Benaki will remain in the history of Greece as a great personality with ethics, institutional commitment, and selfless contribution.
