Anna Psarouda-Benaki, the first woman to serve as Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, passed away at the age of 92. She was a distinguished legal scholar and Emeritus Professor of Criminal Law at the University of Athens. Anna Psarouda-Benaki was born in Athens and studied Law at the University of Athens, pursuing postgraduate studies in Germany. She worked at the Max Planck Institute and followed an academic career at the Law School of Athens, serving in all ranks. She entered politics in 1981 with New Democracy and was elected a Member of Parliament for 28 years. She served as Minister of Education, Culture, and Justice, as well as Speaker of the Parliament from 2004 to 2007. During her tenure as Speaker, she promoted parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation with international organizations. Anna Psarouda-Benaki made significant contributions to the field of Criminal Law, directing the journal “PENAL CHRONICLES” and writing numerous books and articles. In 2010, she was elected a full member of the Academy of Athens.
