Paphos: Coastal Erosion Re-emerges

Coastal erosion is re-emerging as a serious problem in coastal areas of Paphos, such as Geroskipou, Pegia, and Polis Chrysochous. The phenomenon has intensified this year, possibly due to increased rainfall, but also due to the non-completion of coastal protection projects. In Polis Chrysochous, erosion has exceeded 70 meters in some areas. The competent authorities have visited the Chrysochous coastline to assess the situation and promote actions. In Polis Chrysochous, the first phase of a project to shield the beach with breakwaters has already been implemented, with funding from the Municipality and the State. The project includes the construction of fourteen breakwaters, with priority given to the construction of four in front of the Municipal Beach. The implementation of the project aims to protect the coastline from erosion and preserve the beach. The re-emergence of the erosion problem highlights the need for continuous monitoring and maintenance of coastal protection projects, as well as the completion of the remaining projects designed to protect the coasts of Paphos.
