Halloumi Exports Unaffected by Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak

The Veterinary Services are issuing a reassuring message regarding halloumi, despite the detection of 11 cases of foot-and-mouth disease in areas of Cyprus. The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia are not expected to impose trade restrictions on Cypriot halloumi exports, recognizing the uniqueness of its production process. The decision is based on the fact that the high temperatures developed during halloumi production render it practically sterile from the virus. Therefore, the product is considered safe for distribution in international markets. Despite the positive development for halloumi, the United Kingdom has implemented strict precautionary measures for other products, banning the import of live animals, fresh meat, and animal feed from Cyprus. Countries have removed Cyprus from the list of foot-and-mouth disease-free countries, but are exempting halloumi from the ban, provided it has undergone heat treatment at 70°C for 30 minutes.
