Prosecutor of the Republic, Paulina Evthivoulou, launched a sharp criticism against the media and political parties during a press conference regarding the appeal of the acquittal decision for Dimitris Syllouris and Christakis Tziovanis. The conference aimed to explain why the Al Jazeera video was not accepted as evidence and why it was not possible to secure the attendance of prosecution witnesses. Visibly agitated, Ms. Evthivoulou emphasized that the officials of the Legal Service are receiving threats and bomb attacks and called on the media and society to support them. She expressed the view that the undermining of criminal justice officials by political parties and journalists is dangerous and could lead to the collapse of the criminal justice system. The Prosecutor rejected the term “collapse” in “golden passport” cases and stressed that the goal is not convictions, but the proper administration of justice. She underlined that the Legal Service has a duty to inform about its work, regardless of who is at the helm. Evthivoulou insisted that criticism is acceptable, but the undermining of the work of the justice officials is harmful and requires a mutual relationship of respect and protection from all sides.
