OSAK: Increased Co-payments for Medications Affect Thousands of Patients

The Cyprus Federation of Patient Associations (OSAK) expresses concern over increased co-payments for medications affecting thousands of patients in the General Healthcare System (GHS). These increases are due to rearrangements of medications following the expiration of patents for original drugs. OSAK has already begun discussions with the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) to find solutions, as patients are forced to pay significantly higher amounts for medications they have been taking for years, without a change in price. The problem concerns drugs in the same category with different active ingredients, where the choice is made by the attending physician. The elderly and pensioners with low incomes are particularly affected. OSAK calls for specific interventions to prevent the cost from being passed on to patients and to ensure fair access to medication.
