Zoran Mamdani Sworn In as Mayor – 'This is Truly a Lifetime Honor and Privilege'

Zohran Mamdani was officially sworn in as mayor of New York City shortly after midnight on Thursday, in a historic ceremony held at a decommissioned subway station in Manhattan. He is the first Muslim mayor of the city and took his oath on the Quran. Mamdani, who is also the first mayor of South Asian descent and the youngest mayor in generations, pledged to bring transformative change with policies aimed at reducing the cost of living. His agenda includes free childcare, free buses, and a freeze on rents for around one million households. A more formal swearing-in ceremony will follow at City Hall, with Senator Bernie Sanders administering the oath. Afterwards, a public celebration will be held on a section of Broadway known as “Canyon of Heroes.” Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, and moved to New York at a young age. He has worked on political campaigns and was elected to the state legislature in 2020. His election marks a new era for New York City.
