Organized Crime in Cyprus: A New Phase of Confidence and Expansion

Organized crime in Cyprus has entered a new, concerning phase, expanding beyond its traditional boundaries and impacting key sectors of the economy. According to MP Andreas Pasourtidis, criminal organizations are operating with increasing confidence, even during the day and in crowded areas, indicating a failure of deterrence by the authorities. A significant element is the infiltration of criminal groups into the supply chain, with reports of extortion and control over essential goods, such as egg supplies to hotels. This activity is shifting towards small and medium-sized businesses, creating a climate of insecurity. Mr. Pasourtidis strongly criticized the government's handling of the problem, rejecting the argument of legislative gaps. He called on the Minister of Justice to investigate his subordinates and determine why they are providing false information. He emphasized that tackling organized crime requires a strategic plan that goes beyond simple measures, such as increasing patrols. The focus should be on dismantling the leadership structures and the full responsibility of the Police leadership and the Ministry of Justice for operational decisions, in order to restore the rule of law.
