Blind Organization Demands Substantial Changes to Disability Bill

The Pan-Cypriot Organization of the Blind expresses strong opposition to the new disability bill, characterizing it as a "major fiasco" and a downgrade of the rights of people with disabilities. The organization points to the lack of increase in allowances and benefits, despite the rising cost of living, as well as the abolition or degradation of previous legislative provisions. It also expresses concern about the creation of a “two-speed” system, with mandatory inclusion in the new regime and limited ability to return to the previous one. A key point of criticism concerns the age limit of 65 for certain benefits, which the organization considers age discrimination. In addition, it criticizes the maintenance of strict socio-economic criteria through the Minimum Guaranteed Income. The organization argues that the delay in the payment of benefits from the date of application, instead of the date of evaluation, legitimizes delays to the detriment of beneficiaries. The Pan-Cypriot Organization of the Blind emphasizes the need for substantial changes to the bill, which will ensure the full implementation of the rights of people with disabilities, independent living and their equal participation in society. It demands the protection of their full rights and the elimination of discrimination and exclusion. The organization calls on the State to take action, in order to shape a bill that responds to the real needs of people with disabilities and contributes to improving their quality of life, providing them with the necessary benefits and services they are entitled to.
