Works to expand Agios Dometios checkpoint with a third lane of traffic have been completed, including work within the Green Line. The project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), also includes the construction of a new pedestrian walkway. To open the new lane, staffing of the new checkpoints by the Police and Customs Department is required. The project aims to improve traffic flow and alleviate problems faced by drivers crossing the Ceasefire Line in Nicosia. The project was implemented in close coordination between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot contractors, under the technical guidance of UNDP, serving as an example of cooperation. The expansion of the checkpoint is expected to facilitate crossings, reduce congestion, and enhance safety for vehicles and pedestrians. The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to improving the daily lives of Cypriots and encouraging crossings through the Ceasefire Line, with the aim of a fair and lasting solution to the Cyprus issue.
