Medical Students Protest for University Clinics – Demand Immediate Bill Advancement

Medical students from the University of Cyprus are organizing a protest outside the Parliament on March 12th, demanding the immediate advancement of the bill for the establishment of University Clinics and Hospitals. Students are protesting the delay in passing the bill, which was approved by the Council of Ministers in February 2025 but remains in the parliamentary committee. The bill is considered a significant institutional reform, as it regulates the clinical training of medical students, the establishment and certification of university clinics, the placement of doctors in hospitals, and the quality standards of education. The delay is particularly worrying in light of the dissolution of Parliament on April 23, 2026. Students point out that Cyprus is the only EU country without a University Hospital, despite the existence of three medical schools. The lack of university structures affects education, patient access to high-level services, and the attraction of academic and research programs. They are calling for the immediate passage of the bill before the dissolution of Parliament and a commitment to a specific implementation timeline. The mobilization is coordinated by Andria Papapetrou, with the participation of other students from various years of study.
