Challenges to Personal Data Protection in the Age of AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) brings significant challenges to personal data protection as it rapidly integrates into everyday life. The lack of transparency in algorithms, the risk of algorithmic discrimination, and the increasing reliance on automated systems raise concerns about the protection of citizens' rights. The Data Protection Authority (DPA) points out that Greece and Cyprus face additional challenges due to digital inequality, limited institutional experience, and lack of resources. A particularly worrying phenomenon is the emergence of deepfakes, audio-visual content created or modified by AI, raising issues of trust in technology and information. Transparency and reliability are crucial for addressing these challenges, requiring clear regulations and political will to protect personal data in the age of AI.
