Nordic Countries Seek to Strengthen Cooperation with Greenland

The Nordic countries are seeking to strengthen their cooperation with Greenland by upgrading the Helsinki Agreement. This move comes after pressure from the US to purchase the island and as part of an effort to grant full rights to the autonomous regions of Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the Åland Islands. Greenland, which boycotted previous meetings due to a lack of equal participation, will actively participate in the revision process. The revision of the Helsinki Agreement is considered historic and crucial for the future cooperation of the Nordic countries. Greenland wants to be recognized as an equal partner, while also considering the possibility of independence from Denmark, although its economic dependence and the potential consequences of such a move are causing concern. The majority of Greenland's residents desire independence, but there is fear of the economic vulnerability that would result from breaking ties with Denmark. Furthermore, there is concern that independence would expose Greenland to increased influence from the United States. The Prime Minister of Greenland has stated that in the event of a conflict of interest between the US and Denmark, Greenland will choose Denmark. The revision of the Helsinki Agreement marks a new era in Nordic cooperation, aiming to strengthen regional stability and address common challenges such as climate change and geopolitical tensions.
