Britons Were Unprepared for Drone Attack, Sirens Wailed for Four Hours – Kourio Mayor Describes Panic to Parliament

The overnight drone attack on the Akrotiri military base caught the British authorities off guard, according to the Mayor of Kourio, Pantelis Georgiou. Mr. Georgiou, who rushed to the scene after the incident, stated that he was informed by the British around 12:15 am and that people were panicked. Discussions with the British also concerned the possibility of evacuating the area. Sirens sounded for four hours, a first-time experience for the Mayor, and there was no pre-defined protocol for the actions that needed to be taken. The Civil Defence initially did not have access to the Base area, which became possible under the supervision of the Mayor. The decision to evacuate Akrotiri was made in consultation with the Minister of Interior, as the British were unclear about the need for evacuation. The Mayor emphasized the lack of shelters and sirens to inform citizens, something that needs to be addressed immediately. After the evacuation, approximately 800 people, or 80% of the residents, returned to Episkopi. The situation highlighted the need for better coordination and preparation in the event of similar incidents in the future. In conclusion, the drone attack on Akrotiri caused panic and highlighted shortcomings in the preparation and coordination of the authorities. The lack of protocols, delays in information, and the absence of safety infrastructure are significant issues that need to be addressed immediately to protect citizens.
