AKEL Leader Emphasizes Importance of Parliamentary Elections

The General Secretary of AKEL emphasized the importance of parliamentary elections, highlighting that they determine which interests are served. Speaking at an event presenting AKEL's candidates for the province of Famagusta, he stated that the elections are crucial for the passage of legislation affecting citizens' daily lives and for controlling the executive branch. Stefanos Stefanou presented examples where AKEL attempted to promote laws for taxing bank excess profits and protecting borrowers from foreclosures, facing opposition from the government and other parties supporting banking interests. He noted that the stronger AKEL is in parliament, the stronger society is, and the more difficult it is to pass policies that serve large interests. He also emphasized the need to stem the rise of the far-right, stressing that AKEL is the only party consistently opposing it. Mr. Stefanou also referred to the Cyprus issue, emphasizing that a strong AKEL will continue to play a leading role in efforts for a solution, as its positions are important to the international community. He stressed that a vote for AKEL is a vote that changes correlations in favor of society and strengthens the voice of the many.
