Changes Proposed for Parliament: Election of Speaker, Live Committee Hearings, and 'Name & Shame'

Parliament is promoting a series of changes to its operation, which will be put to a vote at the last plenary session of the current term. The changes include simplifying the election of the Speaker of the House, introducing an absolute majority system in the first round and a simple majority in the second, as well as providing for a public draw in the event of a tie. In addition, it is planned to replace the Speaker of the House by any MP, instead of the oldest, as is currently the case. Live broadcasts of committee meetings will also be reintroduced, with the aim of transparency and accountability. A maximum duration is set for meetings (two and a half hours) and the accountability of ministers is strengthened, with the publication of cases where ministers refuse to answer questions within a specific timeframe ('name and shame'). The proposals are expected to be voted on April 2nd, with the aim of the new Parliament starting its operation in a renewed framework.
