The Agonizing Pieces of the Puzzle: The Story of a Missing Cypriot Soldier

The funeral of Nikos Violaris, missing since 1974, was recently held, bringing a painful end to his family's years-long search. Nikos, 18 years old at the time, heroically fell in battle in the Lapithos-Karava area, and his remains were found buried in a location that his brother, Andreas, had walked many times searching for traces of him. The story of Nikos is a piece of the puzzle that is slowly and painfully completed for what Cyprus experienced in 1974. He was a sapper, a member of the 70th Engineer Battalion, and engaged. During the war, his battalion undertook missions to lay mines, and on August 6th, during the ceasefire, they were attacked by Turkish forces. The men of the battalion split into groups to escape, but most fell into the hands of the invaders. Nikos was killed in the battles, leaving behind a family plunged into pain and anxiety. The Violaris family, and especially Andreas, endured years of uncertainty and searching, until the final discovery and identification of Nikos's remains. The story of Nikos is a tragic reminder of the sacrifices made to defend the homeland and a call to never forget the missing and the heroes of 1974.
