“The Others Have the Problem, Not Us!”

Recent incidents of aggressive behavior in high schools and gymnasiums in Limassol and Larnaca, where teachers were subjected to verbal abuse, threats, and attempted physical violence by parents and students, have raised concerns. OELMEK denounces the incidents and demands immediate measures from the Ministry of Education and the Police to protect teachers. However, the author expresses skepticism about the effectiveness of the measures, arguing that the problem is not the behavior of students or parents, but the refusal to recognize the problem by society. Those involved seem to believe they have no problem, but that the problem lies with others. The author cites a characteristic example, where a student involved in violent incidents stated that “the others have the problem, not us.” This attitude, according to the author, is the root of the problem and explains why efforts to solve it fail. The author emphasizes the need for a change of mindset and recognition of responsibility by all involved, in order to effectively address violence in schools.
