European Nations Respond to Trump's Threats Over Greenland Military Presence

Eight European countries (Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom) issued a joint statement expressing their solidarity with Denmark and the citizens of Greenland, responding to threats from Donald Trump to impose tariffs due to the dispatch of military personnel to the Arctic island. These countries are committed to strengthening security in the Arctic within a common transatlantic interest and emphasize that the tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations. Simultaneously, Germany abruptly withdrew its military personnel from Greenland, just 44 hours after their arrival, without providing any explanation. The decision was made on Sunday morning, and all scheduled meetings were canceled. Trump's move is pushing transatlantic relations to a critical point, with European leaders considering retaliation, including the use of the Anti-Coercion Instrument (the EU's “bazooka”) – a powerful tool for trade countermeasures originally designed to counter China's coercive tactics. Activating this instrument would allow Europe to impose tariffs and investment restrictions on the US. The European Union is considering the imposition of targeted and proportionate countermeasures, as the soft approach it has been following until now is being strongly challenged.
