Gesy: €20-22 Monthly Cost for 10,000 Patients for Blood Thinners

Approximately 8,000 to 10,000 Gesy (Cyprus National Health System) beneficiaries are being forced to pay up to €22 per month for blood-thinning medications due to a recent reclassification to a category of newer drugs. OSAF (Cyprus Federation of Patient Associations) describes the development as “unethical” and warns of serious consequences. The HIO (Health Insurance Organization) is considering absorbing part of the cost, and consultations are scheduled for March with the participation of OSAF and pharmaceutical companies. The problem arose after one of the drugs lost its patent, leading to a recommendation to prescribe the cheaper generic version.
