The Missing Link in the Vision of the Savings and Investment Union (SIU)

The Savings and Investment Union (SIU) aims to mobilize the accumulated savings of European citizens and channel them into productive investments. However, despite efforts to enhance financial literacy, private individual participation in investments remains low, indicating that the challenge is not only educational but also behavioral. Research shows that financial knowledge does not automatically translate into investment. A lack of trust is a significant barrier, as a large percentage of Europeans do not trust that investment advice is provided in their best interest. The situation is particularly acute in countries that have been hit by economic crises. The European Commission recognizes the lack of trust as a key problem and has proposed legislative initiatives, such as the Retail Investment Strategy (RIS), to enhance transparency and investor protection. The supervision of financial ethics and ensuring that investment advice is aligned with the interests of clients are crucial for building trust and increasing participation in investments.
