Fear of Cameras Blocking Emergency Vehicles - Police Statement

The Cyprus Police announced that giving priority to emergency vehicles is not just a legal obligation, but also an act of responsibility that can save lives. Recently, there have been incidents of non-compliance by drivers, especially at traffic light-controlled intersections, due to fear of being recorded for a violation by the Traffic Camera System. The Police reminds drivers that they must give priority to ambulances, fire trucks, police cars and other emergency vehicles performing duties and with flashing lights and sirens activated. Drivers must immediately move to the side of the road and stop their vehicle until the official vehicle passes. Failure to comply with this obligation carries a penalty of imprisonment or a fine. In cases where drivers are reported by the Traffic Camera System for giving priority to an emergency vehicle, the Police will consider requests to cancel the report. The Police emphasizes that even a one-minute delay in an emergency can be fatal, and the unobstructed passage of emergency vehicles reduces the risk of traffic collisions.
