“Çagri Bey” Sets Sail for Somalia – First Turkish Drillship Mission

Turkey's new 7th-generation drillship, “Çagri Bey,” has embarked on its first mission outside Turkish waters, heading to Somalia for oil exploration. President Erdoğan contacted the crew, wishing them success on the mission, which is expected to last approximately 45 days due to the inability to pass through the Suez Canal due to the height of the mast. The mission aims to explore for oil in three locations, based on previous seismic data collected by the research vessel “Oruç Reis.” “Çagri Bey” is an ultra-deepwater drillship, capable of drilling to depths of up to 12,000 meters, even under high-pressure conditions. It features an advanced dynamic positioning system, allowing it to operate in waves up to 6 meters. The vessel was purchased by the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) in 2021 and arrived in Turkey in 2022. The drillship’s name refers to Çağrı Bey, a significant leader of the Seljuk Turks. This mission marks an important step for Turkey in exploring hydrocarbons in international waters, strengthening its energy independence and presence in the region. The successful completion of the mission could have significant economic and geopolitical implications for Turkey, opening new horizons in its energy policy and enhancing its position as a regional player.
