Ukraine War Caused Emission of 311 Million Tonnes of CO2 Equivalent

A new study reveals that the war in Ukraine has caused the emission of 311 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2) over the past four years. This represents approximately half of the annual greenhouse gas emissions of Germany, Europe's largest economy. Military activity accounts for 37% of the emissions, while wildfires caused by the war correspond to nearly a quarter of the total emissions. Ukraine is seeking compensation from Russia for the climate damage caused by the war, with Kyiv estimating the amount at $57 billion, and is expected to submit the request to the Register of Damages for Ukraine of the Council of Europe.
