China Prepares to Launch First 'Robot Astronaut'

Chinese humanoid robot manufacturer Engine AI has announced plans to launch its PM01 robot into space, in collaboration with Beijing Interstellar Human Spaceflight Technology. This will mark the creation of the world's first robotic astronaut. The PM01, a general-purpose AI system, features advanced sensors, rapid motion response, and autonomous decision-making capabilities, having already successfully performed a spin. Space missions present significant challenges, including vacuum, microgravity, extreme temperatures, and radiation, requiring high reliability and adaptability from robotic systems. Engine AI and Interstellar are working together to improve the PM01 to meet these conditions, focusing on durability and the ability to perform missions autonomously. According to the company, humanoid robots can take on dangerous tasks in space, such as maintaining space stations and exploring hazardous areas, reducing the risk to human astronauts. The PM01 is designed to mimic human movement and features an exoskeleton made of durable aluminum alloy. This initiative represents a significant step for China in integrating artificial intelligence into space exploration. Engine AI and Interstellar aim to establish the PM01 as the first robotic astronaut, addressing the technical challenges that arise.
