UN Condemns Continued Israeli Settlement Expansion

The UN condemns the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, reporting that more than 6,000 new settlement units have been approved or promoted. UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East, Ramiz Alqebaro, stressed that Israeli activity is expanding control in the area, even in parts of Areas A and B. In his report to the Security Council, Alqebaro stated that the demolition of Palestinian structures has accelerated, with 429 structures being demolished or seized, leading to the displacement of 575 people. At the same time, the ceasefire in Gaza remains fragile, with ongoing air strikes and exchanges of fire. According to UN figures, 292 Palestinians have been killed and 1,741 injured in Gaza during the reporting period, while the West Bank has seen 32 deaths and 833 injuries, with an escalation of settler attacks. The UN expresses concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where 1.4 million people remain displaced. The UN condemns settlement expansion as a practice that threatens the viability of an independent Palestinian state and reiterates that all settlements are illegal under international law. It calls for an end to demolitions, protection of the Palestinian population, and a restart of the political process for a two-state solution.
