Munch and Rego: A Hidden Relationship of Influence

A recent discovery reveals a long-standing, previously unknown influence of Edvard Munch on Paula Rego, two significant artists. A letter from Rego, written in 1951 when she was 16, after visiting an exhibition of Munch's work at the Tate Gallery, reveals her enthusiasm for the Norwegian painter, particularly for "The Scream" and "Inheritance". This experience appears to have deeply influenced Rego's work, as evidenced by an early painting of hers titled "Drought", which bears striking similarities to Munch's palette and style. The painting, recently discovered, will be exhibited at the Munch Museum in Oslo, in the exhibition "Dance Among Thorns", the first major exhibition dedicated to Rego in Scandinavia. This discovery highlights an important aspect of Rego's artistic journey and the impact of Munch's work on shaping her artistic identity.
