Zelensky Expresses Readiness to Meet with Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated, through Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, his willingness to engage in direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach an agreement to end the ongoing war. The most sensitive issues remaining unresolved concern territorial boundaries and the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is under Russian occupation. Russia, for its part, demands territorial concessions from Ukraine, including a complete withdrawal from the Donbas region and other areas it has annexed. Mr. Zelensky has previously expressed his desire to meet with Mr. Putin, but the Kremlin has generally responded with caution. Recent direct talks between representatives of Kyiv and Moscow were held in the United Arab Emirates, with US mediation, and are expected to resume on February 1st. Foreign Minister Sybiha emphasized that Mr. Zelensky is prepared to discuss even the most difficult issues in order to find a solution to end the conflict. However, Russia insists on its territorial demands as a prerequisite for any discussion of a ceasefire. The situation surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant remains particularly concerning, as it was seized by Russian forces in March 2022, and its safe operation continues to be a challenge. Resolving this issue is critical to preventing a potential nuclear disaster.
