UN Chief Condemns Attack on Hospital in Darfur

The UN Secretary-General strongly condemns the attack with a drone on the El-Daein Training Hospital in East Darfur, which resulted in the deaths of at least 60 people, including children and healthcare workers. This attack adds to a series of attacks on health facilities in Sudan, with more than 200 attacks recorded since April 2023, causing over 2,000 deaths. The Secretary-General reminds all parties involved in the conflict of their obligations under international humanitarian law, which protects medical personnel and facilities and prohibits attacks on civilians and civilian targets. He also calls on the parties to immediately de-escalate the conflict and agree to a ceasefire. He stresses the need to return to the negotiating table, with the aim of achieving a lasting ceasefire and a comprehensive political process under Sudanese ownership. The United Nations states its readiness to substantially support steps to end the conflict in Sudan and build sustainable peace.
