Foot-and-Mouth Disease Response in Cyprus: A Case of Reactive Measures?

The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, presented the measures to address the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the House of Representatives, which first appeared in the occupied territories in December. While 600,000 doses of vaccine have been secured and 238,000 administered, criticism is focused on the delayed response of the Ministry, as the disease was detected in the occupied territories several months ago. The government is proceeding with compensation for loss of income, seeking disease-free areas for the import of new livestock, and has allocated €700,000 for disinfection equipment. However, the speed at which the Ministry of Agriculture is moving is considered insufficient in relation to the rapid spread of the disease. The situation is compared to a firefighting operation after the fire has already broken out, rather than preventive measures. The government is in contact with the European Commission to request an exemption from the mass culling of asymptomatic animals, due to the island nature of Cyprus. The main criticism remains the lack of prompt response and the delay in activating the necessary measures. The experience from dealing with the crisis highlights the need for proactive action and faster response times in addressing similar threats.
